Comment: The Bengals addressed a pressing need by adding arguably the best offensive line prospect in the draft. Whether Smith is tabbed to replace the departed Stacy Andrews at right tackle or shift him to the left side if Levi Jones’ health troubles continue remains to be seen but expect him to make an immediate impact.

Comment: For the second straight year the Bengals add a USC linebacker to defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s arsenal of players. Maualuga was a three-year starter in the middle for the Trojans and a player the USC coaching staff called the “most menacing” linebacker of in the era of coach Pete Carroll. That includes last year’s No. 1 pick, Keith Rivers.

Player: Michael Johnson

Comment: Bengals coaches were wowed by Johnson’s physical attributes and the fact that he produced 19 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss in just 15 career starts in college. They are also determined to get Johnson to produce more consistently as he transitions into the NFL. If they can do that Johnson should help the Bengals improve a pass rush that produced just 17 sacks in 2008.

Comment: Coffman is coming off a foot injury suffered against Northwestern in the Alamo Bowl but there is no denying the potential impact he could have for Carson Palmer and the offense. Coffman won the Mackey Award last season as college football’s top tight end. He caught 30 touchdown passes in Missouri’s run-and-shoot attack.

Comment: Luigs was named All-American twice and three times he was a finalist for the Rimington Award, emblematic of the nation’s top collegiate center, including winning it as a junior. Blocked for 2008 first-round draft picks Darren McFadden and Felix Jones when the Razorbacks ranked fourth in the nation in rushing, averaging 286.5 yards per game.

Comment: Homegrown product who grew up on Cincinnati’s east side, played at McNicholas High School before moving on to the University of Cincinnati. In his two full seasons as the Bearcats’ punter he averaged 45.9 yards per kick and had 47 punts of 50 or more yards. He led the nation in net punting as both a junior and senior, and had just three touchbacks in 60 punts as a senior.

Comment: Originally recruited to Michigan as a wide receiver, Morgan eventually took over the cornerback spot once occupied by current Bengal Leon Hall. Bengals coaches envision Trent as being capable to play physical bump-and-run style defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer began implementing last season.

Comment: Rushed for 4,321 yards and 63 touchdowns the last two seasons combined but the 25-year-old comes to Bengals with numerous off-field issues in his past. He was dismissed from his high school team and from Central Arkansas for fighting incidents and has had multiple run-ins with police. He did not play college football in 2005 or 2006 in part due to off-field issues.

Comment: Bengals RB coach Jim Anderson worked out Vakapuna during BYU’s pro day in March, where Vakapuna piqued the interest of several teams. Earned BYU’s team award for unselfish devotion, an award named in honor of former Bengals LB Leon White, as a junior.

Comment: Voted by teammates to become a permanent captain his junior season. Suffered an ankle injury in the middle of last season that ended a streak of playing in 44 straight games but returned to action and performed well enough to earn a starting spot in the East-West Shrine game.

Comment: Led the undefeated Utes with 77 receptions for 900 yards last season, including career-highs with 12 catches for 125 yards in Utah’s Sugar Bowl win against Alabama. Also grabbed game-winning touchdown catch with 48 seconds left in regulation as Utah rallied to beat TCU, 13-10. Has earned degree in human development and family studies.
